Consistently, it’s one of the first things out of my clients’ mouths.
When I ask what they want. What decision they need to make next. How they are feeling in the moment.
Almost immediately they say…
“I don’t know.”
Here’s what I’ve learned after 25 years of working with leaders: “I don’t know” is almost never the truth.
It’s delayed decision-making. It’s fear wearing a comfortable disguise. It’s the hesitancy to commit before you’re confident you can’t be wrong. It’s so much noise in your head that your brain has quietly outsourced the whole question to “later.”
But it is almost never… not knowing.
As summer begins and the rhythms shift, we’re going to flip some scripts together.
The most dangerous stories we carry aren’t the ones we doubt. They’re the ones we’ve repeated so often we’ve stopped questioning them.
“I don’t know” is one of those stories. And it will keep you frozen right where you are if you let it.
Flip the script: You already know enough.
You may not have the full answer. You don’t need it.
You know one step you can take. One thing you can do right now that moves you forward. Not the whole plan. Not the 12-month strategy. One step.
Take it. You’ll be like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones when he sees the chasm between where he is and getting the Holy Grail. Remember the scene? He closes his eyes and takes a step off the ledge into thin air, but his foot magically lands on a hidden, solid pathway. Step after step the next stone appears and he crosses the chasm on the invisible bridge.
“I don’t know” freezes you at the edge. With a little faith in the process and yourself, each step moves you forward.
You know something. Start there.
