Mental Framework
HOW TO MASTER YOUR MINDSET
Learn to identify and interrupt the thought patterns that keep you stuck.
Your brain might be sabotaging your success—but it doesn’t have to
Your head weighs about 10 pounds. But it carries more weight than anything else in your leadership.
Exhibit A
For years, I told everyone, “I am not a runner.” That wasn’t random. From childhood, I subconsciously absorbed two beliefs:
- I needed to be good at everything I did.
- I needed to look pretty doing it.
Running? I wasn’t good at it. And I definitely didn’t look good doing it.
So I doubled down: “I wouldn’t run if a lion was chasing me.”
Those beliefs became an identity. And it leaked far beyond my workouts.
They quietly shaped how I saw myself—and what I believed I could handle as a leader, a mom, and a woman.
Then came a coaching intensive that cracked me open. I confronted those limiting beliefs, not only about running, but about what I thought was possible for my life. Through tears and shaky knees, I made a decision: I would train for and run a half marathon in six months.
Even though I hadn’t run a mile since high school. Even though I had three kids under four. Even though I held a demanding executive leadership role.
It wasn’t about the race. It was about my mindset.
Because here’s the real deal: Your beliefs shape your behavior. And your behavior shapes your results.
Once I trained my mind, my body followed.
And I didn’t only run that half marathon—I ran two.
The Mindset Matrix
Your brain has a default setting. And it’s not working in your favor.
Neuroscience tells us that more than 80% of your thoughts are subconscious, negative, and repetitive. That’s your brain on autopilot—unless you disrupt the pattern.
That’s the bad news.
The good news? You can change it.
Do this quick, but powerful coaching exercise:
ASSESS YOUR THOUGHTS
First, determine how positive or negative your mindset is right now.
- Are your inner thoughts mostly encouraging or critical?
- Do you think in possibilities or prep for worst-case scenarios?
- Are you hopeful about your future or bracing for disappointment?
- Are your thoughts leading you where you want to go or keeping you stuck?
ANALYZE YOUR FOCUS
Second, assess whether your focus is sharp or scattered.
- Are your top goals reflected in how you spend your time?
- Does your calendar match your core priorities?
- Are you jumping from one urgent thing to the next?
- Are you confusing busyness with real progress?
Plot your responses on the graph
Use the Mindset Matrix below to visualize where you are right now.
Plot your responses to the two dimensions:
Thoughts: Positive ↔ Negative
Focus: Low ↔ High
This will reveal your current mindset quadrant—giving you powerful insight into what’s driving (or draining) your leadership impact.
What’s your current reality?
When your thoughts align with your goals and your focus is intentional, you naturally accelerate your results.
But when negativity creeps in and focus fades, even the most gifted leaders feel stuck, scattered, and small.

Train Your Brain
Holistically successful leaders aren’t the ones who never face stress, distraction, or self-doubt. (Hi, I’m a CEO with ADHD and 3 teenagers!) They’re the ones who know how to refocus quickly and consistently.
Mental wholeness isn’t about always thinking positive thoughts. It’s about building the mental agility to shift your mindset when you notice it’s working against you.
Why? Because what you focus on expands.
Do This Now: Schedule Energy Bursts & Breaks
Your brain isn’t wired to be “on” at the same speed all day. It thrives in rhythms—bursts and breaks, not nonstop output.
To sustain focus and keep your creativity sharp, let your brain work in strategic sprints—not mental marathons.
Energy Bursts
Energy bursts drive progress and maximize your output. They are strategically determined blocks of time where you work on your most important priorities with full focus.
- Block 60–90 minutes to go deep on your highest priority.
- Eliminate all distractions: notifications off, door closed, tabs shut.
- Protect this time like you would a board meeting.
Why they work: You enter a “flow state” where your brain performs at its peak.
Energy Breaks
Energy breaks involve creative thinking and help prevent burnout. They are deliberate mental breaks to stop thinking about the problems you’re solving.
- Step away from screens and decisions.
- Move your body. Breathe deeply. Hydrate.
- Resist the urge to scroll or check email; this isn’t passive time, it’s recovery.
Why they work: You’re giving your brain space to process, reset, and creatively problem-solve.
Mental wholeness isn’t a luxury. It’s your leadership edge. The more consistently you train your brain and manage your mindset, the more sustainably you lead.
