New Year, Same You… What Now…

I hate the “new year, new you” message. It’s dumb, dishonest, and dishonoring. It’s a new year, but it’s the same you. (And you are wonderful!)

But with new opportunities for growth.

By now, the sparkle of January 1st may have worn off. Maybe you’ve already stumbled on that resolution. Maybe the gap between intention and action feels wider than you’d like.

You’re not alone. Research shows that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by mid-February. Most people have already quit by the end of January.

But 20% who stay the course and achieve their goals? Research shows…

They don’t rely on motivation and good intentions. They build systems and have support.

Neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki’s work shows that our brains are wired for habit formation through repetition, not inspiration. The prefrontal cortex—responsible for willpower and decision-making—has limited daily capacity. It fatigues. That’s why “just push more” and “try harder” always fails.

The leaders who succeed do three things differently:

1. They anchor change to IDENTITY, not outcomes.
Instead of “I want to exercise more,” they think “I’m someone who moves my body.” Your brain’s default mode network responds more powerfully to identity-based statements because they align with your sense of self.

2. They build ACCOUNTABILITY and SUPPORT into their systems.
Research from the American Society of Training and Development shows that having a specific accountability partner increases your likelihood of success to 95%. Your brain’s mirror neuron system activates when you’re witnessed and supported—making change feel less isolating and more sustainable. You don’t transform alone.

3. They practice SELF-COMPASSION, not self-criticism.
Kristin Neff’s research demonstrates that self-compassion (not self-judgment) predicts sustained behavior change. Your brain’s threat detection system (amygdala) stays activated under criticism, keeping you in fight-or-flight. Compassion activates the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing for learning and adaptation.

You don’t need a “new you”. You need to become more fully yourself—with practices, systems, and support that make achieving your goals easier and lighter.

I’d love to help you and your team make that happen this year. If you want to explore the possibilities!
