The consequences + cure for loneliness 😨

When was the last time you felt lonely? Google “loneliness epidemic” and you'll find a long list of studies, research, and stories that paint a devastating picture of what's happening with us.

The Surgeon General has even declared an advisory that about half of adults are suffering from loneliness (stats are worse with our kids). We've never been more connected and yet we are more disconnected from one another, and it's killing us.

The holistic consequences of loneliness are profound:

  • Physically: Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, weakened immune system, and sleep disturbances. Chronic loneliness can even affect the body's inflammatory response, which can contribute to various health issues. Decreased life expectancy can be comparable to that of smoking or obesity. Loneliness can increase use of substances (e.g., alcohol or drugs) as a coping mechanism, overeating or undereating, and decreased physical activity.
  • Emotionally: Intensifying difficult emotions and reducing enjoyable ones, making it difficult for you to experience joy, happiness, or contentment in your life.
  • Mentally: Depression, anxiety, and increased stress levels, which can also lead to a heightened sense of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness. Impairments in memory, attention, and decision-making.
  • Relationally: Loneliness leads to a cycle of isolation, including withdrawing from social interactions. This can impact your ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships.
  • Spiritually: Leads to feelings of emptiness, purposelessness, and a lack of fulfillment.
  • Renewal: Loneliness affects your work performance, stress levels, and ability to recover your life through meaningful rest and recovery.

If you're lonely, it doesn't have to stay that way!
